In the Garhwal region, Ramman is a religious celebration and ritual play. Every year, the celebration takes place following Baisakhi, a harvest festival. The local priest announces the Ramman festival's date on the day of Baisakhi, which falls on the ninth or eleventh day following Baisakhi. The dance of Ganesha and Parvati is performed at the start of the Ramman after a prayer to Ganesha, the destroyer of impediments. The Sun God's Dance, a recreation of the creation-myth involving the birth of Brahma and Ganesha, comes next. The Bur Deva dance, featuring Radhika and Gopi Chand (Krishna), is one of the additional dances. Following these initial performances, attention is now turned towards the local Ramkatha.
Rama's life events are sung to a total of 324 beats and steps, starting with his visit to Janakpur and ending with his coronation after his return from exile. The dancers who perform the Ramayana through dance wear 18 masks made of bhojpatra. The Bhumiyal Devta's temple's courtyard serves as the scene. These performances feature singing of Jagar, a musical interpretation of regional tales, which is a significant component.
* The exact dates of the festival depend upon the Hindu Calendar.
