Every year in the month of Avani, the Puttu Sokkanathar Temple in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, hosts the annual puttu festival. The event normally takes place the last week of August or the first week of September.Shiva, in the guise of Puttu Sokkanathar, is said to have come before an elderly woman who made her living by selling puttus. After the elderly woman's puttu was consumed, Shiva gave her moksha. The celebration takes place at Arapalayam on the banks of the Vaigai River.
Houses in the area prepare puttu and present it to Shiva during the festival, which is held at the Puttu Thoppu on the southern banks of the Vaigai River.
