Navarathiri Festival celebrated across Tamil Nadu on the 15th of October

Navarathiri, the Festival of Nine Nights, is one of the most popular and widely observed Hindu holidays. During the nine days of Purattasi, the Tamil month of September to October, Navarathiri is observed. The celebration honours Goddess Durga's (Parashakthi) victory over Mahishasura, the king of the demons. On the tenth day, people celebrate Vijaya Dhasami, the day that symbolises victory over the King, with intense religious enthusiasm in commemoration of good triumphing over evil. The followers put together a "Golu" on the festival of Navarathiri, which is a themed doll exhibition that tells a tale or illustrates a figure from Hindu mythology. The figures, dressed in silk robes, are set out on a stepped Dias

To celebrate the victory of good over evil, the devotees extend an invitation to their neighbours to come to their Golu and engage in "Bhajanai," which involves chanting religious songs and reciting slogans. Following the bhajanai, presents and refreshments are given to the visitors. The return presents include fresh flowers, coconuts, betel leaves, turmeric-kumkum, glass bangles, and jewellery. The refreshments are primarily cooked pulses. In Tamil Nadu, the ninth day of the Navarathiri celebration is known as "Saraswathi Pooja." At this festival, items such as machinery, literature, and musical instruments are "worshipped." Well-known Amman temples in the state, such as the Kanchi Kamakshi Amman Temple (Kanchipuram), the Meenakshi Amman Temple (Madurai), the Samayapuram Mariamman Temple (Trichy), and several more, all celebrate Navarathiri with tremendous fervour and passion.
