The highlight of Kota's cultural calendar is the Dussehra Fair, or Dussehra Mela as it is commonly called. This spectacular gathering now includes other cultural programs in addition to religious ones. On Vijayadashmi, an arrow is shot at the Ravan effigy, depicting Ravan being killed by Ram, and this is done by a representative of the former royal family.
Over a million people travel from Kota and the surrounding villages to Dussehra Maidan to see this spectacle. The cultural program series begins the next day. Renowned artists from throughout the nation are sent invitations to partake in an array of cultural events. Qawwali night, Kavi Sammelan, the Sindhi cultural program, the Rajasthani traditional music and dance program, and Cine Sandhya are among the activities.
