The Madras War Cemetery is situated in Chennai's Nandambakkam neighbourhood (previously Madras). In the southeast and east of India, where it was not possible to guarantee their long-term upkeep, it was established to receive Second World War burials from civic and cantonment cemeteries.
856 Commonwealth soldiers who lost their lives in the Second World War are buried at the 2.75-acre cemetery. To honour the citizens of the Commonwealth countries who lost their lives while serving in the armed forces, the Imperial War Graves Commission—now known as the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC)—established it in 1952. Together with the Government of India, the CWGC looks after the cemetery. The Defence Ministry has granted a lifelong lease for the cemetery to the CWGC.
