11 Jan 2024
NewsChief Minister of Maharashtra Eknath Shinde said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will open the Mumbai Trans Harbour Sealink (MTHL), also known as the Atal Setu. The longest sea bridge in the nation will be the Sealink. The 22 km long, six-lane bridge spans 16.5 km of sea and 5.5 km of land via viaducts to link the island city of Sewri with the mainland city of Nhava-Sheva. The MTHL was constructed using 504,253 metric tonnes of cement and 177,903 metric tonnes of steel. As of right now, the Airoli-Mulund connector and the Vashi connector are the two entry points to Navi Mumbai. These connections are used by many people travelling to Alibaug, Matheran, or Lonavala.
In addition to cutting down on travel time between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, MTHL would facilitate the adjoining Raigad district's economic integration with Mumbai's larger economy.
Mumbai and Navi Mumbai connectivity:
MTHL will be connected to the Eastern Motorway and the currently under-construction Worli Sewri connection in Sewri, which is located on the Mumbai side.
Three places have MTHL connectivity on the Navi Mumbai side:
- Shivaji Nagar Interchange on the Navi Mumbai side: Connectivity to JNPT and the Navi Mumbai International Airport would be given via the Sivaji Nagar interchange with CIDCO's planned Coastal Road.
- Ramps at SH-54 close to Jasai: Panvel – Uran State Highway connectivity (SH-54)
- Junction at National Highway 4B close to Jasai: Panvel, Uran, and JNPT will be connected by this junction.
39,300 cars are expected to travel on the MTHL each day between the Shivaji Nagar and Sewri interchange, and 9,800 vehicles are expected to travel between Shivaji Nagar and Chirle.
The bridge would shorten the trip from South Mumbai to Chirle by around 30 kilometres, and since it will only take 16 minutes to cross, it will save at least an hour of travel time. The bridge is expected to last 100 years and support 70,000 cars every day.
