NewsSituated on 40 acres near the Cochin International Airport in Chengamanad village, "Cochin Sports City" would be India's first carbon-neutral sports city with an international cricket stadium. As part of its mission "Beyond 2020," the Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) presented Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan with the proposal and initial design on Tuesday at the four-day International Sports Summit Kerala, which was held at the Greenfield Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram. The idea was put up by KCA President Jayesh George.
Forty thousand people will be able to sit in the proposed stadium. In addition, it will have an e-sports arena, clubhouse, eco park, water sports park, sports medicine and fitness centre, training field, indoor and outdoor practice facilities, and a sports academy and research centre.
In addition, the KCA has announced the opening of three additional domestic venues in various areas, all while the current facilities are being upgraded. In addition, the KCA will contact the State government to convey its desire in keeping Greenfield International Stadium, the Sports Hub, open for 33 years. According to an announcement from the KCA, 12 first-rate sports infrastructure facilities have already been built across the State at a total expenditure of almost ₹150 crore under the BCCI's Mission 2020 objective.
The KCA's original plan to build a stadium in Edakochi was abandoned due to strong opposition from local environmentalists who said the project would damage the mangroves and require the restoration of wetlands. To the dismay of supporters, the city has not hosted an international cricket match since the KCA ceased using the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium, which is still used for football.
