Indira Gandhi International Airport is the primary international airport serving Delhi, the capital of India, and the National Capital Region. The airport is spread over an area of 5,106 acres and is situated in Palam, Delhi, southwest of the New Delhi Railway Station. The airport is named after Indira Gandhi (1917–1984), the former Prime Minister of India and is the busiest airport in India in terms of passenger traffic since 2009. It is the seventh busiest airport in the world, as per the latest rankings issued by UK-based air consultancy firm, OAG.
It has two main terminals that are located about 5 kms from each other; Terminal, the old Palam Airport caters to domestic flights and Terminal 3 is mainly used for International flights and some domestic flights. Terminal 1 is used only for domestic flights of low cost airlines. The new Indira Gandhi International Airport or the Terminal 3, opened in 2010, has been designed to handle the ever increasing air passenger traffic that has more than doubled since 2007.
