Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh Guru, is connected to this gurdwara. It honours his 1707 encounter with Prince Muazzam, who would go on to become Emperor Bahadur Shah. After Aurangzeb's death, the prince had requested him for assistance in his struggle with his brother to take the throne. Near Humayun's Tomb, Guru Sahib met the Prince, with whom he sketched up their war plan. For recreation, they witnessed organised bull and elephant battles. If the Prince would punish everyone accountable for the betrayal that resulted in his sons' deaths and the destruction of his army and city, Anandpur, Guru Sahib would aid him. Later, the Prince was assisted by Guru Sahib in deposing his brother and taking the kingdom.
After a massive Sikh army led by Sardar Bhagel Singh overran Delhi in 1783, he initially constructed Gurdwara Damdama Sahib, or the "place of rest." It was a little Gurdwara at first. The Gurdwara was later renovated by personnel assigned by Maharaja Ranjit Singh. This led to the construction of a deorhi, a Sikh architectural edifice, which included structures for pilgrims and priests. 1984 saw the construction of a new structure. The celebration known as Hola Mohalla brings thousands of believers together here each year.
