Government College of Art and Craft is one of the oldest art institutions in India in Kolkata. The School of Industrial Art was established at Garanhata, Chitpur, on August 16, 1854, "to establish an institution for teaching the youth of all classes, industrial art based on scientific methods." The Government School of Art was the subsequent name of the institute, and in 1951 it changed again to become the Government College of Art & Craft.
