One of Goa's largest celebrations, Ganesh Chaturthi is observed with great affluence. Families gather together during this time of year by travelling across the nation and even the world.
Buying a clay murti (statue) and ceremoniously installing it at home marks the start of the celebration. Prior to bringing God home and placing him on an altar, families decorate a room with a matoli, a wooden canopy, decorated with flowers, seasonal vegetables, and fruits. In addition to the cheery colours of the decorations, the space is well-lit thanks to fairy lights. After one-half, five, seven, nine, or eleven days, the idol is submerged to mark the conclusion of domestic festivities.
Lord Ganesh's favourite food, modaks, is made by the ladies of the home. Other savoury dishes, such besan laddu and nevri, are served on banana leaves. Pooja is done every day, and instruments like the ghumot and tal are used to accompany the singing of artis, or devotional songs.
During the festivities, a number of events are organised, including fancy dress and rangoli contests. The music and light extravaganza featuring Hindu gods is the major attraction.
