Dedicated to the legacy and culture of South India, DakshinaChitra, or "a picture of the south," is a living history museum located in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The distance from Chennai to it is 25 km (16 mi). The Madras Craft Foundation (MCF) established and is in charge of the museum, which opened to the public on December 14, 1996. In 1984, the MCF was founded. The museum is run by American-born Indian art expert Deborah Thiagarajan. The 10-acre site for the museum was leased for 33 years from the Tamil Nadu government. The location, which faces the Bay of Bengal, is near Muttukadu on the East Coast Road that links Chennai and Pondicherry.
DakshinaChitra, designed as a history village, features a variety of exhibits and relocated originals of homes that represent the way of life of people in the southern Indian states. The displays include South Indian customs in architecture, art, traditional performing arts, and crafts. A research unit, a crafts market, a playground, a space for religious events, a stone workshop, and gift shops are among the facilities.At DakshinaChitra, there are artisans who work there permanently and are happy to show off or explain how they create their goods.Also, artists who use the community studio routinely host seminars for a variety of crafts.
