Theni District's MangalaDevi Kannagi Temple hosts the Chitra Pournami Festival. A well-known religious monument called the Mangala Devi Kannagi Temple can be found in the picturesque magnificence between the districts of Theni in Tamil Nadu and Idukki in Kerala. The Western Ghats are visible from the temple's location on a hilltop. The pilgrims travel the Cumbum Valley's steep but manageable mountainous road. The temple for Kannagi was built by Cheran Chenguttuvan, the founder of the prehistoric Tamilagam, about 2000 years ago. It is situated in Vannathiparai, Theni district, seven kilometres from Pazhayankudi. The temple was given the name "Kannagi Kottam or Mangaladevi Kannagi Temple" and blessed poojas were held there.
According to the lunar cycle, Chitra Pournami is celebrated on a full moon day that occurs in the Tamil month of Chithirai between April and May.
Only during the Chitra Pournami Festival is the temple open to visitors. Priests from Tamil Nadu and Kerala conduct rites and prayers at the temple during the Chitra Pournami celebrations, which mark the full moon day, which take place in the months of April and May. The ritual is thought to grant women long, blissful marriages (sumangali).
On this day, a large number of female devotees come together to prepare and present Pongal, a delightful sweet rice dish, to the Goddess Mangala Devi. On the eve of this event, a panchaloha idol constructed of five metals is brought from Kambam. The planning for this celebration is under the supervision of the district administrations in Theni, Tamil Nadu, and Idukki, Kerala. In order to prevent the ecosystem from being affected by the growing number of worshippers visiting the temple, many safeguards are required.
Hundreds of ladies congregate here on the eve of Chitra Pournami each year to worship Goddess Mangala Devi in hopes of finding happiness and success in life.
