The historical customs and festivals have lately been brought back to life, particularly the yearly Chapchar Kut. This celebration is based upon cycles of cultivation. Here, shifting agriculture, also known as "jhum" farming, is carried out. Forest area is cleared, and fallen trees and bushes are allowed to dry in the sun before being burned. The term "chapchar" describes this stage of the growing cycle. The farmers take advantage of this brief period of relaxation to celebrate the Chapchar Kut holiday.
