Under the name and design of "The Madras Trades School," the institution was founded in 1916 with the goal of training apprentices in the trades of plumbing and mechanical engineering, with a class size of 20 students for each semester. The Central Polytechnic College became the new name of the institution in 1946. Over time, the Madras Trade School relocated to its own premises at Broadway when a separate structure was built there. Originally, the school operated out of a rented building.
Central Polytechnic College was chosen for TEQIP implementation based on merit, and as of October 1, 2008, the institution is operating under the Block Grant scheme.
