Hemis Tsechu celebration is a must-attend festival of Ladakh. Held on the tenth day of the fifth month of the Tibetan lunar calendar, it's a vibrant two-day event. The event celebrates the birth anniversary of the founder of the Nyingma order of Tibetan Buddhism, Guru Padmasambhava. If you haven't seen any ostentatious Cham performances, Hemis Monastery should be your next stop. A variety of deity, goddess, dakini, and asuran characters are represented in the mask dance. You will see a performance by Guru Padmasambhava and his eight incarnations, unique to this event. The dancers play musical instruments including drums, cymbals, and longhorns while elegantly decorated in silk brocade. The 22-foot-tall thangka of Guru Padmasambhava, painstakingly crafted from the finest silk, is a sight to behold.
