07 Apr 2023
NewsIn order to showcase the tourism potential of the Balaghat region in Madhya Pradesh. It highlights the traditional games of the Baiga Community, and promote the preservation of Baiga cultural heritage at baihar in Balaghat, the Balaghat Tourism Promotion Council (BTPC) organised the Baiga Olympic game. The first two days of April 2015 saw the beginning of this. There have been efforts made to make it a huge triumph. Participants in the event, which centres on tribal tradition games, are both young and old members of the Baiga community, mostly from Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. The event's commentary is also delivered in the Baigani Dialect, a local native tongue.
The Baiga Olympics featured a variety of traditional competitions, such as volleyball, the Matka race, the Gobardanda, the Tritange race, the Bhalafenk, the Dhanushaban, the Relay race, the Rassa-Kasi, the Vajni game (kusti), the Gobardanda, the Kho-kho, and the Bora Daud in which competitors run while carrying gunny bags.
A unique torch is lit to begin the ceremony. To promote tourism and Baiga welfare, the Balaghat Tourism Promotion Council (BTPC) organises a light relay campaign throughout the district capital and neighbouring districts. Following the torchlighting, the torch is followed by a promotional car that the Balaghat Administration flags off.
After passing through several neighborhoods, the light makes its way back to Baihar in Balaghat. Young boys and girls are invited to participate in the Baiga Olympics as the promotional truck travels through Baiga's lanes. In schools, contests for essays and paintings are held with a theme of forests, wildlife, and tourism. At various places, competitions for wall paintings were held on the walls of community buildings.
Locally, the District Administration holds the Baiga Olympic at Baihar Tehshil in Balaghat. The Baiga Olympic competition takes place between January and February.
