Unlike other boat races in Kerala, the Aranmula Uthrittathi Boat Race takes place in the Pathanamthitta district and is a significant athletic and cultural event. It is a distinctive event because of its distinct history, the myths that surround it, the diverse kinds and designs of boats that compete, and the race's unique setting. It has a tight connection to the sacred rites and customs of the Aranmula Parthasarathy Temple. Every year, on the day of Uthrittathi in the month of Chingam, the race takes place. In addition, it is the anniversary of the idol's consecration at the Aranmula temple.
The chundan vallams in Kuttanad are not like the aranmula chundan boats in terms of size and shape. Because they were devoted to the Aranmula Parthasarathy Temple, they are known as Aranmula Palliyodams. Their structures are comparatively larger and higher. These palliyodams allow for the precise centring of up to 15 persons. The approved form of the boat song for the Aranmula boat race is vanjippattu, in the Eastern style. In the vanjipattu genre, Aranmula has its own songs, such as Kuchelavritham, Bheeshmaparvam, and Santhanagopalam. The palliyodams in Pampa are divided into A and B classes for the purpose of conducting contests. In addition to serving as a representation of Kerala's rich cultural legacy and customs, the boat race is a spectacle that draws throngs of visitors to the shores of Aranmula.
